The library resources consist of over 500,000 volumes and approximately 2,000 current periodical subscriptions covering the subject areas corresponding to the academic programs and activities of the different centers. It is growing at the rate of 10,000 volumes per year. Most materials are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System. The library's resources include:
  1. The Reserve Collection of textbooks and course materials selected by faculty members for required reading are kept "on reserve"behind the Circulation / Reserve Counter. These materials are loaned out for short periods to users - two hours / overnight and three days. They are listed in the online catalog.
  2. The Reference Collection consists of reference books covering most subjects, language dictionaries, encyclopedias, national and subject bibliographies, current yearbooks, directories, university calendars, travel guides, etc. These materials are not ordinarily borrowable. Nor may they be taken out of the Reference Room. Staff can, however, arrange for such books to be transferred temporarily to another reading room for use with material available only in that room. Records for all reference works will be found in the library's general catalog, online or manual.
  3. The Ready Reference (frequently-consulted reference works) are conveniently located near the Information Desk.
  4. The Main Collection such as books, reports, government publications, conference proceedings, etc., is arranged in the open stacks according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, so that documents on the same or related subjects are together. Each of the rows of racks has been posted with an indicative list of subjects of documents in the corresponding row.
  5. Theses, Dissertations, and Other Publications such as project reports, research reports, reprints and technical notes are shelved separately according to a unique number. These publications are listed in the library catalog database.
  6. The Serial Collection such as current magazines and bound journals received in print format, including abstracts and indexes, are shelved alphabetically by title. These materials are housed on the 2nd floor of the St. Gabriel's Library & the 4th floor of the Cathedral of Learning (with the exception of those issues on microform, which is in Media Services). Current issues which are not yet bound can be requested at the Current Periodicals Desk; older bound copies are in open stacks on the same floor. There is a browsing area where current issues of some periodicals may be read without signing them out. Copies of articles can be made by the operator in the Copy Center. Besides these materials, there is Vertical File containing pamphlets, clippings and other brief information material arranged alphabetically by subject heading in filing cabinets. Maps and Posters are also filed in a cabinet near the Vertical File in the Serial area.
  7. Government Documents include information of technical, statistical and general nature. Most documents are shelved according to the Superintendent of Documents (SUDOCS) Classification System.
  8. The Audiovisual Materials include audio tapes, videotapes and transparencies. They are available for viewing and listening in the designated area and for borrowing. The cassette players are in the Center for Language & Educational Technology within the Electronic Library.
  9. Other Resources include university catalogs, maps, microforms, CDs and CD-ROM Databases. The microform collections, appropriate readers and reader / printers, including multi-media such as CD-ROMs, are in the Electronic Library and the library media specialists can provide assistance in locating and using them. A special collection of Archival Material on ABAC is being set up and will include documents, manuscripts, catalogs, annuals and other materials relevant to the university's history. This collection can be consulted upon request in the Learning & Knowledge Center.
